Lord knows, we love our chocolate. The average American consumes 11.64 pounds of chocolate a year.  Switzerland leads the pack, though, doubling the USA’s consumption with 22.36 pounds of chocolate per year. In fact, the world consumes so much chocolate, that we’re on a crash course with severely decreased supply.  Due to low prices and unfair business practices, farmers in West Africa are opting out of the cocoa business all together. In the next 20 years, we can expect chocolate to become somewhat of a delicacy.

Luckily for all the vegans out there, cocoa is completely plant-based. Although, as you probably already know, many chocolates contain some sort of animal product, whether it be milk, cream, or the sneakier lecithin.

On that note, let’s be clear about Lecithin. When buying chocolate, be sure that if the chocolate does contain lecithin that it is soy lecithin. Lecithin can often be procured from egg yolks, so it may derive from an animal product. Best to steer clear of these chocolate bars, and move onto a different chocolate.

Here’s a list of common vegan and non-vegan chocolate ingredients that you’ll often find on the label.
